Ian’s Story

"In talking to the people Vinnies has helped, I have learnt that it’s rarely about the decisions they made and more about the circumstances that they found themselves in where there is no easy way out."

This year I will be participating in my fourth Vinnies CEO Sleepout, sleeping rough for a night on one of the longest and coldest days of the year to raise much needed dollars and awareness for those experiencing homelessness and disadvantage. Since taking part in my first Sleepout in 2020, my eyes have been opened to the harsh reality that homeless people in our society face on a daily basis. I’m humbled that I’m in a position where in my own small way, I can fundraise and bring awareness for Vinnies to give back to those doing it tough in my community.

My dual roles as the Deputy Auditor-General for NSW and also as a Commissioned Officer (including as a Squadron Commander) in the Australian Army Reserve have presented me with many challenges; however, it’s my role as supporter of the CEO Sleepout that has educated me on the often-insurmountable challenges that so many living rough in our society face day after day. I have come to understand that even the most level-headed person could come close to losing everything with no one to turn to. In talking to the people Vinnies has helped, I have learnt that it’s rarely about the decisions they made and more about the circumstances that they found themselves in where there is no easy way out. That is where the amazing work of Vinnies — and others — has impact, helping those in need find a way forward.

For anyone who is questioning whether they should do the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, I would tell them to just do it! You will never regret your decision to take part. For me, knowing that I am part of an event that will change so many lives for the better, gives real meaning and a sense of purpose as to why I take part. Together we can do something worthwhile, do something good…help to end homelessness. In the end what it comes down to is everybody deserves a safe place to call home.
