Joe's story

He wanted to turn his life around and sought out Vinnies.

Joe (23) was experiencing homelessness and was a heavy user of methamphetamines. He wanted to turn his life around, and sought out Vinnies to assist him with accessing detox and rehabilitation programs for his drug addiction.

After Joe visited a Passages Resource Centre in Perth, staff found him a place in a backpackers hostel before securing short term accommodation at Vinnies Tom Fisher House. Tom Fisher House is a dog friendly, 12-bed facility that aims to remove as many barriers as possible for people accessing support.

A safe place to sleep reduces a person's exposure to drugs and violence and allows them to think clearly about pathways to a brighter future.

By providing Joe with accommodation, Vinnies staff could offer him a higher level of casework. A safe place to sleep reduces a person's exposure to drugs and violence and allows them to think clearly about pathways to a brighter future.

With the support of Vinnies staff, Joe was referred to agencies that could assist him further with his addiction. He has since been accepted and commenced a rehabilitation program. Passages staff continue to check in on Joe and encourage his progress.

Funding from the Vinnies CEO Sleepout also provides much needed material aid - such as food and travel vouchers - for people accessing our services. It also supports our weekly healthy cooking and sports program which allow young people to build their confidence and develop social and life skills in a relaxed nurturing environment.

The success of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout has enabled our youth homelessness service Passages to continue to provide opportunities that achieve more positive outcomes for the young people we work with each day.
