On 18 June, I'm sleeping out to raise funds for women and children experiencing homelessness
Every night, thousands of Australians experience
homelessness.
Homelessness is deeply connected to gender inequality –
including economic insecurity, gender based violence, and a lack of safe,
affordable housing. In Australia, 45% of all women and girls seeking
homelessness assistance identify family and domestic violence as a cause.
For too many women, leaving violence means leaving their
home, with nowhere safe to go. Without secure housing, some are forced to
return to unsafe situations – sleeping rough, in a car, couch surfing or in
short term accommodation.
This year I’m taking part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout to
raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society, supporting people experiencing
homelessness and helping women and families rebuild their lives.
For one night, I’ll be sleeping outside to raise awareness
and bring home the realities of homelessness, and the urgent need for change.
