One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference
This year I am sleeping out at the 2026 Vinnies CEO Sleepout, Vinnies' major fundraising event for the year. Homelessness doesn't always seem visible on the Gold Coast, but it's absolutely here. As at February 2026, the Gold Coast Homelessness Network had a by name list of 381 rough sleepers and 69 in temporary accommodation.
The last time I did something like the Sleepout was in 2009 when I was living in Philadelphia. As part of an experiential exercise, we gave up our personal belongings and clothing for a night and a day and were largely left to fend for ourselves. I ate at a food kitchen and did odd jobs for cash. It was a very humbling experience and even that short period challenged my self worth. I fully expect this to do the same. Of course, it's merely a taster of the reality, but it's always good to try and understand other peoples' lived experiences. Homelessness can happen to anyone.
