Estella’s Story

"After hearing first-hand from those assisted by Vinnies and how their lives have been changed for the better, it really hit home how important it is to have someone in your corner fighting for you and that’s what Vinnies does. Everyday Vinnies stands up for those doing it tough and helps them get back on their feet."

Last year was the first time I headed to White Bay Cruise Terminal to sleep out for the night and raise funds along with awareness for the many Australians experiencing homelessness and tough times. It was an eye-opening experience and I’m pleased to be returning this year joined by two work colleagues. Together we make-up team MELT 2025.

My role as Executive General Manager – Merchandise for Metcash is both challenging and rewarding. As a wholesale distribution and marketing company with a focus on supporting independent retailers in Australia and New Zealand, Metcash take their corporate social responsibility role supporting local communities seriously.

Since 2012 Metcash has been partnering with Vinnies and during this time over $6 million has been raised through IGA’s supermarket Christmas campaigns and natural disaster appeals making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. I am proud to be part of an organisation that gives back and encourages their staff to do the same.

Being part of such a familial organisation, I have experienced first-hand how staff are nurtured and strengths recognised allowing for individual growth within a supportive environment. I can see this approach paralleled in how Vinnies work with their clients by providing encouragement, resources and a support system which is vital to someone going through a challenging period. That’s why it’s so important to raise funds and awareness via the Sleepout, so Vinnies can keep offering services for people to live their best lives and with dignity.

I have never had second thoughts about doing the Sleepout and view the experience as rewarding and educational and would encourage everyone to sign up and take part. The benefits far outweigh sleeping out in the cold for one night.
