One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference
This year I’m taking part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout for the first time.
Rough sleeping in Frankston City is at a four-year high, with more
than 50 people identified as sleeping rough in May 2026. Beyond that, many more
are experiencing homelessness in less visible ways - staying in crisis
accommodation, on couches, in cars, or in overcrowded and insecure housing.
For one night, I’ll be sleeping outside. While this can’t replicate the reality of homelessness, it’s an opportunity to stand in solidarity and raise awareness of the reality too many people in our community face every day.
I’m taking part to help raise funds for services providing safe accommodation, including for people escaping violence. But just as importantly, I want to shine a light on the growing scale and complexity of homelessness and the urgent need for all levels of government to work together to reduce rough sleeping and give people long-term housing security.
In Frankston City, this challenge is becoming more acute—and the need for action has never been greater.
With the State Election in November, there is an important opportunity to prioritise solutions that reduce rough sleeping and deliver secure housing and better support for those doing it toughest.
