Bang. A Door Closes, and one word comes to mind. HOMELESS
In late 2023 I joined St Vincent de Paul Society (SA) Inc as their “Central Adelaide Homelessness Services Manager”, looking at making some sort of difference to men who were homeless or at the risk of homelessness. Although I had a good understanding of what this meant, little did I realise how big the problem was and how much needed to be done in this space.
No-one realises just how close we all are to potentially becoming a number, another statistic under the homelessness umbrella. Working with men who have fallen onto this path, many without warning or having done anything wrong, I quickly became aware that this situation drains self-respect, confidence and in many cases a willing to live. Men whose circumstance, out of their control, resulted in ending up with nowhere to live. Yes, there are some who have made decisions that were not great, but for many, the decision was made for them.
The Vinnies CEO Sleepout is where participants sleep out, without shelter, to experience what it is like to be on the streets and without cover for the night. A brief insight into what many are experiencing, and this is a major fundraiser for a brilliant organisation who has a purpose to provide support, assistance and an opportunity to people who have fallen into difficult times. Receiving less than 10% funding from the government, Vinnies relies on events such as this to continue to support and assist tens of thousands of Australians. This is my, and your, opportunity to help.
Together we can ensure that funds are available to Vinnies to assist, support and give opportunities to those who have fallen into difficult times. Please help.
