Neville Tomkins

Chief Commissioner, Scouts Australia (NSW Branch) at Scouts Australia
Location: Canberra

Participating in their 8th Vinnies CEO Sleepout

One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference

Neville has always been a strong advocate for youth, especially disadvantaged youth.

He is currently the Chief Commissioner, Scouts Australia (NSW Branch) and Honorary Commissioner, Scouts ACT. In NSW, Neville's role is to reposition the organisation so it can play a vital and exciting new role in all communities of NSW – both city and country. His vision is to substantially increase the number of youth across NSW participating in the world renown Scout program.

Neville served 6 years as the International Commissioner of Scouts Australia. His work across the Asia Pacific Region attracted various international recognition awards. He is currently the Chair of the Asia Pacific Governance Committee.
As Chief Commissioner of ACT Scouts for almost 10 years, Neville played an important role in rebuilding Camp Cottermouth, which was destroyed in the 2003 Canberra bushfires. He has actively supported and promoted the Family Support Fund which helps disadvantaged youth participate in Scouting activities and is currently the Vice President of The Arthur Shakespeare Foundation for Scouting.

Neville has served the ACT community for 40 years including as a Justice of the Peace, and as a life time blood donor (he is about to reach the milestone of 425 donations). He is also a White Ribbon Ambassador. In 2010, Neville received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to the community, particularly his youth leadership. In 2012, he received the Highly Commended Award in the Community Service category, as part of the ACT Volunteer of the Year Awards.
Neville recently retired as First Assistant Secretary with the Department of Defence, following a 35 year career with the Commonwealth Public Service, including 25 years as a Senior Executive. His is now volunteering full-time for community based organisations.

Neville has been appointed as an Ambassador, for 2 of his years participating in the campaign, including in 2019 which marks the 10th Anniversary of this wonderful initiative.
