Participating in their 2nd Vinnies CEO Sleepout
One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference
When I hear that more than 116,000 Australians are without a home every night and more than a third of them are children, it makes me both sad and disturbed. Homelessness isn’t something we should ever become immune to or be prepared to accept in a society as affluent as ours.
Growing up, we didn’t have much – but we had a lot of love. I remember my parents struggling as small business owners – working seven days a week and still struggling to make ends meet. My wardrobe as a kid was either hand me downs or Vinnies specials! So I have a warm place in my heart for Vinnies.
I’m now a mother of a nine-year-old and a twelve-year-old who are unlikely to ever know that ‘want’. The opportunity to join my colleagues RACQ CEO Assistance, Glenn Toms and RACQ CEO Insurance, John Myler, once again in this year’s CEO Sleepout is the perfect chance to me to both give back but also to have a meaningful discussion with my kids about this terrible crisis afflicting families across our country right now – every night.
I realise it’s just one night and nothing compared with the trauma of the lived experience. But I’m hopeful that by walking in the shoes of others - even for that one night - I can make a small difference.
We learn our greatest lessons when we are outside of our comfort zones. Sleeping rough for a night might just give me an extra ounce of understanding of what it’s like – but I know it will generate a whole lot of compassion.
It’s also a real and meaningful way to engage the RACQ family, and my own friends and family, to dig deep and give what they can to help Vinnies. They provide tangible and practical solutions for people when we are at our most vulnerable and hit low points in our lives.
PS. In addition to making a tax-deductible donation, please consider being part of our online RACQ raffle (http://raffletix.com.au/racqraffle), with all proceeds going towards the Vinnies’ homeless appeal. Tickets are just $10 each and you’ll be in the running for your share of a prize pool worth nearly $6,000! Thanks.

Hats off to you Michelle (and beanie on!) for supporting such a great cause.
Congrats Michelle for supporting a very worthy cause.
Thanks for giving up a comfortable night’s sleep in support of making a difference to many families in crisis.
Good luck, Michelle and keep warm - switching luxurious home comfort for the street isn't for the faint-hearted. Thanks for being such an inspiration and for leading with such enthusiasm, compassion and empathy. Go RACQ!
Hope it’s not too cold. Good on you.
Awesome example and commitment as always Michelle, love your work.
Michelle, this is a great cause and good on you. Only saving grace is that you won't be doing it in Toowoomba. 2 degrees last night. Try and stay warm.
