Most weeks I volunteer to meet people coming to Vinnies because life is getting too desperate for them. Some only need a frindlt ear to listen, a box of food and a small woollies card. These are the ones that generally live in a house and only have a glitch in their budgeting. The majority of the people that come in are more complelx to help. They are often homeless, alone, hungry, cold and scared at night and have problems with mental health. We as volunteers can give them the standard food and a listening ear, and a referral to mental health services or get our Case Coordinator to speak on their behalf to other agencies that can assist them in other ways. The people that really make me wonder at society are the mothers with children who are sleeping out, or in a car. They struggle to get the children to school, to feed them and to get a hot meal into them in winter. By taking part in the CEO sleepout I think I can do my small part to help Vinnies to support the 1000's of Tasmanians we help every year.
