I am fundraising to raise awareness about homelessness in the Top End.
Homelessness is a major issue across Australia, but the situation in Darwin may differ from other states. We often see many homeless individuals throughout the city, with a significant number being Indigenous people, including many women. They refer to themselves as "longgrassers."
While homelessness is typically caused by factors such as poverty, unemployment, and family issues, in the Northern Territory, additional challenges contribute to the longgrasser experience. Mental health struggles, alcohol dependence, domestic violence, and cultural or community-related issues all play a role. These complexities mean the issue must be addressed with a comprehensive approach.
