Participating in their 1st Vinnies CEO Sleepout
One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference
Every night, thousands of Australians experience homelessness. But it doesn't have to be that way. This year I'm taking part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society to support Australians in need. For one night, I'll be sleeping outside to raise awareness and reflect on the realities of homelessness.
Originally, I was not going to participate in this event and leave it to my business partner Mal Ferraro to carry the flag. However, upon reflection and considering how fortunate I have been in my life with a wonderful wife and family and a successful business that just radiates a culture of caring, committed people, has made me rethink my involvement.
I’ve also reflected on my own situation as a young child after my father died at age 42 and left behind my mother, sister and I at the young ages of nine and seven. I remember vividly my mother spending one night per month volunteering for the Red Cross at the RBH to thank them for the assistance they gave while my father was ill and working a full time and two part time jobs to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. Without the help of a close group of lifelong friends we may well have been in the same situation.
We live in a world where the divide between middle class and poor is becoming greater every year and this points to an ever-increasing demand for the services of Vinnies and the many other altruistic organisations that work closely with those in need of the greatest assistance.
Those of you who know me well will know I don’t generally speak much
about my past and am by nature a private person however, I tell my story as
part of this journey and ask you to join me by donating to this very worthy
cause. Any amount will help make a difference.
