Many know Australia as ‘the lucky country’, so it can be tough to reconcile the fact that over 105,000 Australians are sleeping rough every night.
A certain stigma and judgement around homelessness still exists in our society; a belief that only a certain type of person can become homeless. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.
The truth is, life throws curve balls that can’t always be caught.
Every day, many Australians are facing financial and emotional hardship. Things can be going OK for a while, but a few setbacks and unexpected obstacles can mean it’s suddenly impossible to put food on the table for the family. And without the right support services, sleeping on the streets can quickly become the only option.
I am proud to be part of the CEO Sleepout again this year, because I believe in the immense value of the work Vinnies does every day in breaking the cycle of homelessness and instilling hope in the community.
At EPIC Assist, we are all about levelling the playing field for marginalised members of our community. We know too well that when people are down and out, they need a helping hand to get their lives back on track. Our charity has been closely involved with assisting the homeless community for over a year, and are proud to continue doing so. In early 2017, we commenced a partnership with Orange Sky Laundry to provide casual employment opportunities for homeless people; a number of which have disabilities or particular support requirements. EPIC also provided Orange Sky Laundry with a number of hygiene packs to be distributed to their friends on the street.
I greatly admire the excellent work Vinnies has done to date. Please dig deep and contribute to this most worthwhile cause.
