Participating in their 4th Vinnies CEO Sleepout

One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference

Every night, thousands of Australians experience homelessness. But it doesn't need to, and it shouldn’t be that way. This year I am again taking part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society to support Australians in need. For one night, I'll sleep outside to raise awareness of homelessness.

Few people realise that many in our community are just payslips away from living on the street. A failed relationship, domestic violence, the death of a loved one, or an unexpected upheaval in career can turn someone’s life upside down. In our own communities, increased cost of living and housing stress is seeing more families and individuals need help to avert homelessness. I have come to understand that even the most level-headed person can lose everything with no one to turn to. Talking to the people Vinnies has helped, I have learnt that it’s rarely about the decisions they made and more about the circumstances that they found themselves in where there is no easy way out. That is where the amazing work of Vinnies has impact, as they help the homeless find a way forward.

When I see homelessness, I try not to judge, and ask myself how I can help. Homelessness is a human tragedy. But working together, no matter how small the effort is, we can help someone to get back on their feet, and in doing that, make the world a better place. To help break the devastating cycle of homelessness, we need your support. Donating, even the smallest amount, will help Vinnies make a huge difference to people who need it most.

Other reasons to help?

  • The homeless are humans, the only difference is we don’t worry about our next meal or where is a safe place to sleep.
  • They need our assistance, and we are in a position to help.
  • Knowing that you are helping to make a positive difference, and make someone’s homelessness temporary.
  • Helping the most vulnerable members in our community is a good thing to do.
